  • Non-members do not enjoy any credibility with the above bodies. They have no official way to influence legislative changes and have to accept any changes without an opportunity to challenge them.
  • Non-members may not use SAAFF's Trading Terms and Conditions and therefore have less credibility with importers and exporters.

The Past

The Association's history goes back to the 1920s when it was established with the object of promoting the common interests of members who carry on the business of international freight forwarding by sea, land or air and related activities.

The scope of the Association's activities encompasses all matters concerning the welfare of members; to guard against the withdrawal or curtailment of rights or privileges, and to make representations to any person, body or authority on any matters affecting the collective interests of members. The Association is governed by a Constitution and guided by a Code of Ethical Conduct.

SAAFF is widely recognised as the official representative body of the Forwarding and Clearing Industry. It enjoys recognition by the Government in the form of SARS (Department of Customs & Excise), Department of Agriculture, the newly established Ports Regulator, NRCS (National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications) and TETA where SAAFF has played an advisory in determining the training needs of the industry.

The Present

Recognising that the industry operates in a fast changing business environment the Western Cape was the first chapter to establish permanent secretariat 12 years ago and this has facilitated growth in membership and consistent quality service to members. In recent years the association has forged strong relationships with SARS both in Cape Town and at the Cape Town International Airport and that has led to a better understanding of the respective roles of Customs and agents and much improved service levels.

The Western Cape Chapter constantly strives to add value to membership and to this end we seize every opportunity to arrange and facilitate free workshops and seminars to inform and educate our members about changes in the industry.

The membership of this Chapter is characterised by tremendous community spirit and notwithstanding the healthy competition that exists between them in the business environment, members actively participate in all the Associations activities, whether they be formal meetings or social events.

The Future

The aim of the association is to remain relevant in a rapidly changing business environment where both legislative and technological changes are the order of the day. Building on a strong foundation of excellent relationships with the key stakeholders in the industry this association is confident that it will continue to retain and attract quality members who are leaders in the Customs Clearing and Freight Forwarding sector.
