- Non-members have no official access to SARS, NPA, SAPO, ACSA, the Airlines and Shipping Lines for lobbying purposes and receive no feedback on the status of negotiations.
- Non-members do not enjoy any credibility with the above bodies. They have no official way to influence legislative changes and have to accept any changes without an opportunity to challenge them.
- Non-members may not use SAAFF’s Trading Terms and Conditions and therefore have less credibility with importers and exporters.

The Past
The Association in the Western Cape was first established in the 1920s with the object of promoting the common interests of members who carry on the business of international freight forwarding by sea, land or air and related activities. It is governed by a Constitution and guided by a Code of Ethical Conduct.
The scope of the Association’s activities encompasses all matters concerning the welfare of members; to guard against the withdrawal or curtailment of rights or privileges, and to make representations to any person, body or authority on any matters affecting the collective interests of members.
SAAFF is widely recognised as the official representative body of the Forwarding and Clearing Industry. It enjoys recognition by the Government in the form of SARS (Department of Customs & Excise) and TETA where SAAFF has played an advisory in determining the training needs of the industry.
The Present
In recent years the Western Cape has led the way by being pro-active and establishing a permanent secretariat enabling the delivery of quality service to members and forging strong relationships with SARS both in Cape Town and at the Cape Town International that has led to a better understanding of the respective roles of Customs and agents and much improved service levels.
One of the characteristics of the Association’s membership is the community spirit that is evident when the need to stand together arises notwithstanding the healthy competition that exists between members and the tremendous support of various annual social events.
As a result of a recent restructuring the Western Cape Association is a Chapter of the national association and members must belong to both the national and regional associations with separate subscriptions being levied.
The future
Looking to the future the Western Cape Chapter of SAAFF remains committed to adding value to membership and ensuring that our members are leaders in the industry in terms of advance knowledge of changes in regulations and legislation that govern the industry and those that affect the industry indirectly, for example FAIS and FICA.
The relative lack of training options in Cape Town is currently receiving attention and the various sub-committees and Working Groups continue to put in the time and effort to streamline the industry for the benefit of all. We continue to attract new members thereby strengthening the association even further. |
